Colter's Hell
Cody
Park County
Wyoming

This deposit consists of hydrothermally emplaced sulfur and gyspum, apparently derived from one or more extinct hot springs in the area. The author examined the outcropping in 1977, but did not collect there (it is uncertain whether or not the site is protected); the following observations can therefore be considered more or less incomplete. The site derives its name from John Colter, an early Rocky Mountain fur trapper who had accompanied Lewis and Clark and who visited the area in 1807.

Sulfur - abundant as simple, transparent yellow microcrystals and masses disseminated in a friable, calcareous matrix.

Gypsum - abundant as transparent, colorless acicular crystals
